Oak Wilt Injection in San Antonio: When It Is Worth It

Fungicide injection is the treatment people ask for by name, and it is the one most often sold to trees that will not benefit from it. It works - within real and specific limits.

What injection actually is

A certified applicator drills a series of small ports into the root flare at the base of the tree and injects propiconazole, a systemic fungicide, under pressure. The tree's own vascular system distributes it up into the canopy.

Propiconazole does not kill the fungus outright and it does not undo damage that is already done. It suppresses the fungus in tissue it can reach, which slows or halts the progression of the disease in a tree that still has enough functioning vascular tissue to move the chemical around.

That last clause is the whole thing. Injection protects healthy tissue. It does not rebuild a canopy that is already gone.

When it is worth the money

Injection is a reasonable investment when most of these are true:

• The tree is a live oak. Red oaks die too fast for injection to be meaningful. If a Spanish oak or Shumard is showing wilt, that is a removal conversation.
• The canopy is still largely intact - commonly cited as roughly 70% or better. A live oak that has dropped half its canopy is a poor candidate no matter how much you like it.
• The tree materially matters. A landmark live oak shading the house on a lot in Terrell Hills or Stone Oak is worth real money in property value and in cooling. A mid-sized oak at the back fence usually is not worth a multi-year treatment program.
• You will repeat it. Injection is not one-and-done. Retreatment is typically every one to two years, indefinitely, for as long as the pressure is there.
• The underground spread is being addressed too. Injecting a tree while the fungus keeps arriving through un-severed root grafts is treating a symptom. See trenching.

When it is not

• Red oaks. Nearly always.
• Live oaks with major canopy loss already.
• Trees with structural problems, significant decay, or root damage from construction - you would be spending on a tree that has other reasons to come down.
• Situations where the property has one oak, no neighbors within root distance, and no realistic path for the disease to keep arriving.

There is also a preventive use - injecting healthy live oaks that sit just outside an active infection center, as insurance while a trench is being planned. That is legitimate and it is a different calculation from treating a tree that is already symptomatic.

What it costs in San Antonio

Pricing follows trunk diameter because dosage does. Budget for it as a recurring cost, not a one-time one - a $1,200 injection every eighteen months on a tree you intend to keep for twenty years is a real number worth saying out loud before you start.

Who is allowed to do it

Propiconazole for oak wilt is a restricted-use application in Texas. It should be performed by a licensed applicator, and in practice you want someone who does this specific work regularly rather than as an occasional add-on.

Questions worth asking:

• Are you licensed for this application in Texas, and can I see it?
• Is this macro-infusion into the root flare, or something else? Root flare injection is the accepted method; trunk injections higher up and soil drenches are not equivalent.
• What dosage are you using for this trunk diameter, and how did you arrive at it?
• What is your retreatment interval and what does the follow-up cost?
• What are you telling me about the root grafts on this property?

That last question is the tell. An applicator who quotes injection on a property with an active infection center and never mentions trenching is selling you the easy half of the job.

Realistic expectations

Injection is buying time, and the amount of time varies a lot. On a good candidate treated early, with the underground spread cut off, people get many years. On a marginal candidate in an active infection center with no trench, people get a season and a bill.

The honest framing is that this is management of a chronic disease in a specific tree, not a cure for oak wilt on the property. Anyone promising otherwise is overselling.
