When to Prune Oaks in San Antonio (and When Not To)

There is one tree rule in San Antonio that matters more than all the others combined, and most homeowners have never heard it.

Do not prune oaks from February through June.

That window is when the beetles that carry oak wilt are most active and when fresh cuts are most attractive to them. A pruning cut made in April on a healthy live oak is the single most common way a new oak wilt infection center gets started in a neighborhood that never had one.

The safe windows

In practice, in San Antonio the two good windows are the deep heat of mid-summer and the cold months from about November through January. If you are planning oak work on a schedule, plan it there.

Note that this rule is about oaks specifically. Cedar elms, pecans, crape myrtles, and everything else in a San Antonio yard follow ordinary pruning logic. It is the oaks that have a calendar.

Why the window exists

Dying red oaks form fungal mats under their bark. Those mats give off a sweet, fermented smell that attracts small sap-feeding beetles. The beetles pick up fungal spores from the mat and then fly to the next source of fresh sap smell they can find - which is an open wound on a healthy oak.

Two things line up in late winter and spring: the mats are forming, and the beetles are flying. Cut an oak in that window and you have put out an invitation at exactly the moment the guests are looking.

What counts as a wound

More than people think. The beetle does not care whether the wound came from a saw.

• Pruning cuts, obviously.
• Storm breaks and torn limbs.
• String trimmer and mower damage to the trunk base - extremely common and completely avoidable.
• Nails, screws, and fence brackets driven into the trunk.
• Bark scraped by a vehicle, a ladder, or construction equipment.
• Squirrel and animal damage.

Anything that exposes fresh sapwood on an oak is an entry point during the risk window.

What to do if you cannot wait

Sometimes you have no choice. A limb comes down on the roof in April. A branch is hanging over the driveway after a storm. A tree is a genuine hazard and waiting until July is not a real option.

The rule is not "never cut an oak in spring." The rule is if you must cut an oak, paint the wound immediately.

Immediately means within minutes, not at the end of the job and not the next morning. The window in which a beetle can find a fresh cut is short, and painting closes it. Any latex paint or commercial pruning sealer works; what matters is speed, not product.

This is the one documented exception to the general arboricultural advice against pruning paint. On most species, in most places, sealing wounds is discouraged. On oaks in oak wilt country, it is standard practice. More on that in painting oak wounds.

Emergency and storm work is exactly this case. A crew doing storm cleanup on oaks in the spring should be painting every oak cut on the spot, whatever the season, because the wound is already open.

Tool sanitation

If a crew is working on a tree known or suspected to have oak wilt and then moves to a healthy oak, the saw should be cleaned between trees. This matters less than the timing rule but it is free, and a crew that does it as a matter of course is a crew paying attention.

The practical version

If you own oaks in San Antonio, put this in your calendar and treat it as fixed:

• Schedule all planned oak pruning for July through January. Book it in advance, because the good months are the busy months for anyone who knows this.
• Do not let a landscaper trim oaks in the spring because they happen to be there doing everything else. This is how it usually happens - not from a tree service, but from a lawn crew tidying up in April.
• Keep the string trimmer away from oak trunks year round. Mulch the base instead.
• If anything opens an oak wound between February and June, paint it that minute. Keep a can in the garage.

That is the whole protocol. It costs nothing and it is the highest-return thing a San Antonio homeowner can do about oak wilt.
