Hypoxylon Canker in San Antonio: The Other Oak Killer

Hypoxylon is the disease that finishes off drought-stressed oaks in San Antonio. It looks nothing like oak wilt and there is no treatment, only removal timing.

Oak wilt gets all the attention in San Antonio, and it deserves most of it. But a large share of the dead oaks in this city were finished by something else: hypoxylon canker.

It matters because the two are managed completely differently, and because hypoxylon is the one that turns a slow decline into a sudden structural hazard.

What hypoxylon is

Hypoxylon is a fungus that is already present, harmlessly, in the bark and sapwood of most oaks in Central Texas. It sits there doing nothing for the entire healthy life of the tree.

When the tree loses vigor - drought, root damage from construction, soil compaction, trunk injury, prolonged stress of any kind - the fungus stops being a bystander and begins consuming the sapwood.

This is why arborists describe it as a stress-driven or opportunistic disease rather than an infectious one. Your neighbor's tree did not give it to your tree. Your tree already had it, and something weakened the tree enough to let it take hold.

What it looks like

The signs are distinctive once you know them and easy to miss until then.

  • Bark sloughing off in plates, exposing wood underneath - usually on the trunk or a large scaffold limb.
  • A powdery layer under the shed bark, silver, tan, olive, or reddish-brown depending on the stage. Rub it and it comes off on your hand like a fine dust. Those are spores.
  • The surface hardens over time into a dark grey or black crust that looks almost like charcoal.
  • Canopy dieback above the affected area, often on one side only, matching the section of trunk that is being consumed.
  • No veinal necrosis. No arc of neighboring trees dying in sequence.

The dust is the tell. Nothing else in a San Antonio yard produces that powdery layer under peeling bark.

Why it is a hazard, not just a disease

Oak wilt kills a tree. Hypoxylon eats the wood while the tree is still standing.

The fungus destroys sapwood strength, and it does so from the inside of a trunk or limb that may still look substantial from the ground. A large live oak with an active hypoxylon canker on a main stem can fail without much warning, in wind that would not have troubled a healthy tree.

That changes the priority. A tree with confirmed hypoxylon on a major structural member near a house, driveway, or play area is a removal conversation with a timeline, not something to watch through another season.

There is no treatment

This is the honest part. There is no fungicide, no injection, no soil treatment that clears hypoxylon out of a tree once it is active. Anyone selling one is selling you something that does not exist.

What you can do is on the prevention side, and it is all about stress:

  • Deep, infrequent watering through San Antonio summers, out at the drip line.
  • Mulch to the drip line, three to four inches, pulled back off the trunk.
  • Protect the root zone during construction. Trenching for a pool, a foundation, or a driveway inside the drip line is one of the most reliable ways to set up a hypoxylon failure three years later.
  • Avoid trunk injury. String trimmers, ladders, vehicles.
  • Do not fertilize a stressed tree to try to push it out of decline.

A tree that never becomes seriously stressed generally never has a hypoxylon problem, even though the fungus is present in it the whole time.

What to do

If you find sloughing bark with a powdery layer underneath on a mature oak, particularly on the main trunk or a large limb over a target:

  1. Do not put off assessment. The concern is structural and it is time-sensitive in a way that a leaf problem is not.
  2. Take photos of the affected area and note how much of the canopy above it is dying back.
  3. Expect the conversation to be about removal and timing, not treatment.
  4. On the other oaks in the yard, get serious about water and mulch, because the stress that let this one go is probably acting on the rest of them too.
